Re: Best place to sell coins?
Just for fun, you might ask at your local gun shop. The owner may happen to be also in the coin business. If not there is a decent chance he knows someone who would be interested in buying. Don't forget to tip the owner. I'm sure a gun shop would be a relatively safe place, too.

Re: Best place to sell coins?
call around to your local shops. you should ask for quotes on 90% silver junk coins, .999 silver, and SAEs. three diff numbers. compare those prices to the distance you will burn in gas and act accordingly. thats rational. if you have a decent stash of numismatics to shop then plan on hitting all three but I would put the best price place last.
these prices may be expressed in relative terms like "I pay 10 times face buying 90%" or "I pay melt for .999 fine silver" or "I pay fifty cents under melt per ounce of 999 silver junk and sell for fifty cents over melt." If they cant give you a straight answer then skip em. obviously you have to compare the factor times face for silver, to the current price of silver. use coinflation.com for this purpose. in general dealers will not buy for melt of junk, but some margin under melt so they can make a profit. also the more you bring in the better they pay, because its less hassle and time wasted per transaction. so if you bring in$100 face 90 percent junk, you get less per ounce than if you bring in $500 face. gger volume usually means lower margins. bigger shops may pay more is often the case. but with storefronts, bigger does not mean bigger. like, I know a guy who does a huge volume of 90% who has the crappiest of 4 local stores. but he pays the best and probably does the highest gross, judging from the big line of buyers and sellers he always has compared to the other dudes spending all their profits on rent. There is a new site... www.bullioncity.com It charges no fees but you would need to set a reserve till it gets bigger.

Re: Best place to sell coins?
By all means- check ALL your local dealers. Where I am the dealers will pay less than $hit. So I have to ship everything off. I CRH alot of silver half dollars and when I have a big bill come up or want to add to my hunting $$$$ I like to sell off the 40%ers at least. Now I have a guy that I sell to when he wants some but once I needed to sell and he had just bought a large collection and couldn't buy so I searched- I can't remember where, an add on coinflation.com or somewhere, anyways 5 or so sites came up, coin shops, jewelers, and unitedwebuyitall.com. Everybody wants you to send your stuff and let them give you a quote, unitedwebuyitall.com gave me the best quote before I sent, coin shops called ME to give me a address to ship to and when I said it was 40% silver halves quotes were way low. IF I HAVE to sell again and my main guy can't buy that is where I will try first. Keep in mind my transaction with them was 6 or 8 monthes ago.
www.unitedwebuyitall.com Hopefully your locals can be competitive and you don't have to deal with the BS. Also if your talking about numismatic value, do a search for coin forums. You may have what someone needs. HH Mark |
Re: Best place to sell coins?
Definately, your local coin dealer. Get a good relationship with him, you can always come back and buy later when things are better. That aside, I'd trust Apmex, if you have enough to make it worth their while.

Re: Best place to sell coins?
The best coin dealer I have found locally wants 10% commission. If you sell a one ounce gold coin on Ebay you will be paying around 7% commission (after counting for Paypal).

Re: Best place to sell coins?
If you are selling gold I would avoid using Ebay, as the fees from them and PayPal make it not worth it. Sell your gold back to Kitco or APMEX and send it via Registered Mail to them. You'll get the most money that way.
Silver is too bulky to send to APMEX or Kitco. I'd sell it on Ebay and grit my teeth at the fees. A lot of buyers will not buy from you unless you accept PayPal because it offers "buyer protection". I absolutely hate Ebay these days because of the fees. |
Re: Best place to sell coins?
Yep, eBay is doing the "capitalistic" thing by searching for the "point of pain" with their customers. They'll keep pushing until the equation starts to turn against them, then they'll pull back just a bit.
In the meantime, you would think that some honest competition would spring up - where's Google Auctions ?? eBay's the only real game in town, and PayPal is part of their evil alliance. but, still better than local classified ads. GOTCHA!! :mad_m: -- |
